Colorado Storm Causes Hundreds of Years of Erosion

Typically, when a person thinks about erosion, it is thought of as a long process. It occurs over hundreds, or thousands of years.

Back in September 2013, a Front Range storm hit Colorado that has shown that erosion does not necessarily have to occur over such a long period of time. Researchers from the University of Colorado Boulder have recently published findings that indicate the storm of 2013 eroded hundreds of years worth of accumulated sediment off of Colorado's Front Range. This storm caused anywhere from 7 to 18 inches of rain to fall over Colorado within only a five day period. This rain resulted in over 1,100 landslides, 120 of which were studied for University of Colorado Boulder's research.

While all of these landslides resulted in erosion that typically would have taken almost a thousand years, events such as these are few and far between.

  1. Wow! That's a lot of erosion for such a short period of time.
